Brake Shoes

Brake shoes, more commonly referred to as brake pads in the United States, but called brake shoes throughout much of the rest of the world, are an integral part of your braking system.  They are also designed to wear out with use and will need to be replaced as part of routine maintenance on your vehicle, although the lifespan of a brake shoe will vary with your driving habits.  Shoes consist of steel plates with layers of high-friction material on their surface.  For most disc brake applications, two shoes are placed in the brake caliber, with the high friction surfaces facing inward, towards the rotor.  However, sports cars or other performance vehicles may use up to six shoes per tire.  When the caliper squeezes the pads against the rotor, the friction causes the vehicle to stop.
