Small engine batteries, like the name implies, are used to start small engines.  Given the wide variety of small engines, it should come as no surprise that there is a wide variety of small engine batteries.  Therefore, if you are replacing a small engine battery, the easiest way to ensure that you have an appropriate replacement battery is to bring in the battery that you are replacing.  If you are unable to do that, then knowing the make and model of your device can be critical information.  Some types of batteries, like riding lawn mower batteries, are designed to be used in a variety of different makes and models.  Other types of batteries may have more limited applications.

Generally, you want to consider several things when selecting a replacement small engine battery: voltage, physical size, terminal position, construction, and cold cranking amps.  One of the most important things for you to know when replacing a lawn mower battery is whether it is a U1 battery, which has its positive terminals on the left, or a U1R battery, which has its positive terminals on the right.
