Idler pulley
The idler pulley may be referred to by different names, depending on who is diagnosing your mechanical problem or handling your repairs. It is the part responsible for guiding and maintaining tension on your drive belt or serpentine belt. The serpentine belt connects your engine to different auxiliary parts of your vehicle, such as the alternator, power steering, and air conditioning. You may also hear the idler pulley referred to as a belt tensioner. Whatever you call it, the part is critical to keeping your engine running smoothly; if the belt does not maintain constant tension, it could slip or break, which can literally stop you in your tracks. Fortunately, you generally have some warning before an idler pulley completely fails; the belt begins to make a squeaking noise when the pulley starts to fail.
